Full definition
Komisja Nadzoru Finansowego is the Polish state regulator for financial markets, established in 2006. It supervises commercial and cooperative banks, SKOKs, licensed lenders (since 2017), investment firms, insurers, TFIs and open pension funds. It maintains official registers — checking the KNF register before signing with a non-bank lender is a critical safety step. KNF publishes recommendations (e.g. S on mortgages, T on consumer credit) and issues public warnings about unlicensed operators. It can impose fines and revoke licences. Seat: ul. Piękna 20, Warsaw. Register: knf.gov.pl/podmioty/podmioty-rynku-finansowego.
Concrete numeric example
Before borrowing from a new lender: check the KNF registry (knf.gov.pl). If the firm is not listed in the lender register, operating is illegal. Contracts may be legally unenforceable, and recovery of principal can be difficult.
